Sometimes the Mail’s articles aren’t quite that ridiculous
(but often, they are). But the commenters? Almost without fail, terrifying.
This was just an early Christmas present of a red rag to a bull: Ethnic minority pupils improving faster in three Rs than white classmates
The fun bit is clicking “view all” on the comments, and looking at the difference between the 3 mild ones they leave at the top and the rest, which are only to be found by the more intrepid reader:
Probably more money being thrown at them. A minority again winning in Britain instead of the majority.
- Karen, West Midlands
Um, yes Kazza. Which particular minozzas did you have in mind? Thanks for the detailed and informative argument though. Next!
That’s because minorities are getting more attention and more resources than the native children.
- Paul, Bucks, England
Pity the poor native children of Bucks. Are we counting Angelina Jolie’s children among these “minorities” who are nabbing all the attention and resources?
Of course they are. They are getting virtually one to one teaching as the schools have to employ ethnic teaching assistants for those children.
- Sophie, Newcastle
I agree with Sophie, Newcastle. They are given special attention and most likely answers to tests in order to get them out of school.
- Russell Macdonald, Huelva, Spain
Can’t argue with that policy, only wish it had been around when I was at school, Russ. More time to skateboard and wear global hypercolour t-shirts!!1!
Next! The outrageously politically incorrect adverts from the time equality forgot
There’s some lovely stuff here.
We probably had a healthier society then, raising kids and a healthy family is no disgrace, Its good for society and better than getting into debt for rubbish you don’t need in a so called career. Women were far more fulfilled in those days.
- Clare Days, London
This has the distinct feel of being written by a gentleman who was “far more fulfilled in those days.” Being chained to the sink and having a mangle instead of a washing machine? Fulfilling!
The past is no excuse for all the present day ads that make men look stupid, when did you last see an ad featuring a caring responsible Dad? Feminism HAS GONE TO FAR !
- Martin Swash, Wellington, New Zealand
At least spell your cliché right. Now this is a “caring responsible dad”:
Oh for the days of old, at least things got done on time and correctly! Murderers were hanged and police were police.
- Stephen Fox, London Town
Really hoping that’s deep sarcasm.
For a little (tiny) ray of sunshine, have a read of the rather more sensible commenters on a nasty Mail article here.

Ha! Bravo for using the word embiggen
suchandrika // December 1, 2007 at 3:17 pm
It’s a perfectly cromulent word.

Hahahaha YES!

Dear Martin Swash of Wellington, New Zealand,
1) No, fathers’ rights are not a cliché. As you can see from my “At least spell your cliché right” comment, I am referring to your bizarre “Feminism HAS GONE TO FAR !” sentence. Where is Far? How does an abstract noun get there? How can an abstract noun travel? You see how my small female mind is overheating.
2) Ah, a second comment! You, kind sir, cannot do sarcasm or irony, it seems. Unless you’re reeeeally good at it and I just can’t tell anymore. However, I suspect not.
3) Are you a father? I am guessing so, from the frequent references to fathers’ rights. Do you have daughters? Perhaps you do. Be good to them, like my dad was to me. It helps. It’s better than googling your own name and leaving somewhat sad and error-laden comments out there on teh interwebs.
Adieu.

“and most likely answers to tests in order to get them out of school.”
What the hell?
Suchandrika // January 23, 2008 at 12:40 am
Dearest Martin,
You’ve been googling yourself again haven’t you? I am always so pleased to see your dear name pop up on my blog stats. Just FYI, in the moments in between typing your name and feverishly pressing search every 30 seconds, do pop this phrase into the box: “teh interwebs.” And welcome to the 21st century!
While you’re at it, try “cromulent” too. Sigh.
Anyhoo Marty, you say you don’t “have time for such cromulent clever things such as irony and sarcasm,” but you do have time for some rampant googling and leaving comments like “Nice to see a female engaging in technical stuff, not destroying families and gold digging” on the blogs of strangers. And before you get in a dig about me having time on my hands, well, yes, I do. I haven’t fathered or mothered any children yet. So my time is my own.
Maybe you should, you know, try hang with your kid(s) a bit more? Or get the wheels in motion legally so that you can? Perhaps, if you have a daughter, the gold digging quote might not look so great when she learns how to use the internet in a few years and searches for Daddy’s name, hm? And it’s not a great example to set for a son either. My father’s proudly feminist views are one of the reasons I admire him.
Just some thoughts. Remember, you’re welcome back any time Mr Swash! Always a pleasure.

danerslarue // January 23, 2008 at 12:43 am
Oh dear. Well, if angry fathers do not have time for such cromulent clever things such as irony and sarcasm, move along, sweetie!
Suchandrika // January 23, 2008 at 12:46 am
Aw you guys, bless!
danerslarue // January 23, 2008 at 12:47 am
And it is almost blasphemy to see a Simpsons word misused! However, I wish I could insert Kwyjibo into my dialog here, but since you’re not North American, I can’t.
Smoochez!

Gee, thanks.
The last 6 lines are getting into nasty areas. Your IP add is now blocked. Buh-bye.

I think the reason ethnic minority students are improving faster is probably due to the fact that many are immigrants from less fortunate countries whose families do not take the things like public schooling for granted and want to work hard to take advantage of the things that will allow them to suceed which they never had access to before. Immigrants are more likely to be successful in creating a small business (for the same reason).
and Martin, it’s a shame u lost your children if u truely weren’t a danger to them but if they want to see you they will ask their mother and she will let go of her anger eventually. However these ‘feminised laws’ u speak of keep children away for dangerous people (male and female) and this is of most importance.

BTW, this is an awesome blog Rikers, Sorry it took me so long to drop by.
